ARTHUR R. WENDELL MEMORIAL BENCH CLEAN UP
July 5th, to be exact, is the first anniversary of our organization, Friends of Rahway River Parkway.
To mark our anniversary we grabbed some buckets, brushes and got to cleaning up the Arthur R. Wendell memorial bench. Long overdue! The Arthur R. Wendell Memorial bench located in Rahway River Park commemorates one of the original members of the Union County Park Commission and visionary of the inception of the Rahway River Parkway.
On January 18,1922, the Wheatena Company of Rahway (which Wendell owned) gave the Commission four acres of already developed parkland along 2,300 feet of the Rahway River front near the Wheatena Plant (Elizabeth Ave.) The UC Park Commission agreed to keep the land forever in park condition. As a result of this initial gift, Union County residents were inspired to contribute either land or services to the development of the Union County park system beginning with the Rahway River Parkway.
